The brooder is where your chicks will spend their first few weeks of life, and getting it right is the difference between a relaxed rearing period and three weeks of constant firefighting. A good brooder is warm, dry, draught-free, roomy enough, and easy to keep clean. None of that is expensive or complicated — but each part matters, and they work together.

In Part 1 we covered the critical first 48 hours. Now let's build the space those chicks are moving into, ideally set up and warmed a day before they need it.

Our last two series took you all the way to hatch day — the science of incubation, and getting your breeders and equipment ready for spring. This one picks up the moment the first chick pips and walks the whole journey through to the day those birds join the flock in the coop.
